What is AI Max for Search, and should a small business switch it on?
AI Max is a setting on Google Search campaigns. It shows your advert for searches beyond your keywords and adapts the advert’s text for each search. Switch it on only when your conversion tracking counts bookings correctly.
Last updated 8 October 2026.
In short
- AI Max is a Search campaign setting: it matches more searches, adapts the advert text and picks the landing page for each search.
- Google announced on 15 April 2026 that it was moving out of beta; from September 2026 some campaigns are upgraded automatically.
- Switch it on only with 5 controls in place, starting with conversion tracking that counts each booking once.
What does AI Max change?
| Part of AI Max | What it does | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching | Shows your advert for searches related to your keywords and website, not only the keywords you chose | Negative keywords at account, list and campaign level |
| Text customisation | Writes headlines and descriptions to suit each search, using your site and existing adverts | Text guidelines: words to exclude and messages to avoid |
| Final URL expansion | Sends each searcher to the page on your site that matches the search best | URL exclusions for pages that should never be a landing page |
Has Google switched AI Max on for my campaign?
Google announced on 15 April 2026 that AI Max was moving out of beta. From September 2026, Google has been upgrading some Search campaigns to AI Max automatically, including campaigns that used automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match. Dynamic Search Ads campaigns follow from February 2027.
To check, open the search terms report. If AI Max is on, the match type column shows “AI Max” for the searches it found.
What should be in place before switching it on?
- Conversion tracking counts each booking or sale once.
- A negative keyword list blocks services you do not sell.
- Text guidelines exclude words you cannot use, such as claims a regulator would not accept.
- URL exclusions keep the privacy page, guides and other non-sales pages out of adverts.
- Someone reads the search terms report every week for the first month.
Vibe Studio Marketing runs AI Max on its own Google Ads account with these five controls in place.
